    Young Eugenio Pacelli

    Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli was born on March 2, 1876, in Rome, Italy to parents Filippo and Virginia Pacelli (nee Graziosi). Pacelli was ordained to the Catholic priesthood in 1899, consecrated as a bishop in 1917, and was eventually made a Cardinal in 1929.

    He was elected Pope by his fellow Cardinals on March 2, 1939, following the death of his predecessor, Pope Pius XI. Pius XII died on October 9, 1958, at the age of 82.
